Assess Needs

One of the "wish list" items from the UUFSD board's April, 2007 meeting was #13 "Video viewing space that works in daytime". The need has become more immediate with the success of the Thursday night Social Action Film Series. John Gillies, who launched the series, says they've outgrown the Palmer Library. The only larger facility is Founders Hall, but its projector screen is not useable until dark, due to the many high windows which illuminate it. And it ain't dark at 7pm in the summer.

Plan

John discussed several options with Stu Anderson (chair of Buildings & Grounds). Most promising is to move the projector screen from its high central location to the west end of the hall just above the concrete platform over the built-in seat. This location reduces the screen's exposure to competing light from the high windows while providing viewing for a large audience.

In conjunction, black plastic would be taped across the west windows behind the screen to block out the rays of the setting sun. The plastic would be put up and taken down for each event, a procedure they have already used in the Palmer library. For Sunday morning use, the plastic may not be necessary.

The screen itself would be mounted on a frame supported by the concrete platform. A temporary frame can be made or a standalone screen borrowed to test the setup. If satisfactory, a more complex permanent frame is planned which will pivot up from the existing steel platform supports. During use it would be pivoted up and the screen pulled down. After use, the screen is rolled up and the frame pivots back down. This leaves the screen's housing lying down on the top of the concrete platform, essentially invisible. A six foot ladder would be needed to access the frame to pivot it up or down.

John believes his audience would raise the ~$150 in materials to build the frame.

Sequence
  1. Test lighting with freestanding screen in proposed location.
  2. Design pivoting frame in detail.
  3. Get approval to move screen.
  4. Build frame, install screen.
