Currently two designs in use. First was hogged out of solid wood. Second uses 1x3 lumber sides screwed onto 1x5 back. Failure mode is sides breaking off when umbrella gets shoved to the side. Most have 1-3/4" o.d. steel tubes, some don't. Three brackets are broken and we could use a couple more.
Build five new units of sturdier design. Buy steel tubes and mounting straps. Paint to match benches. Install to replace broken units then fill gaps in the shade.
John Gillies has some 3/4" exterior grade plywood. He will build 5 brackets using this plywood and paint the edges with clear epoxy paint to prevent delamination. (A dimensioned sketch would be nice to include here :-) He will also buy 5 steel tubes, 10 U-brackets and the 10 steel straps to mount. Ordered the straps in two sizes (upper and lower) from McMaster-Carr. Minimum quantity was 10 each, so we'll have 5 extra top straps and 5 extra bottom straps.
