Up on the Roof: Possible Boost to Clean Energy Goals
This novel solution involves a rooftop heat pump that first dehumidifies the air before cooling it with the onsite air conditioner. This method should be 40% more efficient than today's standard air conditioners alone.
By 2050, the global demand for air conditioning will be triple that of 2022, and require more energy than the current total energy demand in the U.S., China, India, Germany and Japan combined.
Amazon will be piloting this method at a number of its commercial buildings. It will be interesting to see if and how it translates to other commercial buildings and eventually to residences. The results should lower energy costs for all. Combined with solar, wind and battery plants, it could help achieve 100% carbon-free energy.
