FROM NEWTOWN ACTION ALLIANCE AND UUFSD GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION GROUP

On Saturday, August 1, 2026, a gunman armed with an assault weapon opened fire at an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, killing three people, wounding seven others, and then turning the gun on himself. Another ordinary day became another American tragedy.

Following the massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Newtown Action Alliance and gun violence survivors succeeded in securing passage of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban in the U.S. House of Representatives—the first time Congress voted to ban assault weapons in nearly three decades. But despite overwhelming public support for banning assault weapons, the bill stalled in the Senate because there were not enough votes to overcome the 60-vote filibuster.

Last week, our #EndGunViolence Lunch & Lobby and After Hours advocacy sessions focused on securing additional cosponsors for the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (H.R. 3115 / S. 1531). Every new cosponsor moves us one step closer to rebuilding the congressional support needed to pass this lifesaving legislation. You can join our lunchtime virtual lobbying sessions every Monday by registering here.

If you have not done so already, please take two minutes to use this form to send an email to your U.S. Representative and Senators urging them to support and cosponsor the Federal Assault Weapons Ban.

Assault weapons are designed for one purpose—to kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time. They do not belong in our schools, houses of worship, grocery stores, movie theaters, workplaces, restaurants, or neighborhoods.

Stand with us—refusing to give up until weapons of war are removed from our communities.
